Effect of lipid supplementation on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of bivalve larvae OMA
Coutteau, P.; Caers, M.; Mallet, A.; Moore, W.; Manzi, J.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Lipids, particularly triglycerides, play an important role in early life stages of bivalves as a source of energy and essential fatty acids. Ingestion and incorporation of the fatty acids supplied through lipid emulsions were verified analytically for larval oysters Ostrea edulis. Changes of the fatty acid composition, in particular of (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA), were demonstrated in total lipids, polar lipids and triglycerides of oyster larvae fed the lipid emulsions as a supplement to Isochrysis galbana (clone T-Iso), and were dependent on the level and proportion of (n-3) HUFA present in the emulsion. Preliminary culture trials with Mercenaria mercenaria showed better growth...

Impact of starvation and of feeding algal and artificial diets on the lipid content and composition of juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and clams (Tapes philippinarum) OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The present study evaluated the effect of starvation and of feeding various algal and lipid-supplemented diets on the lipid content and lipid class distribution in the polar and neutral lipids of early juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas and clams (Tapes philippinarum). T. philippinarum was starved, fed a mixed algal diet (Tetraselmis suecica and Isochrysis galbana (clone T-iso) or solely T. suecica at three different feeding rations, either supplemented or not supplemented with lipid emulsions. C. gigas was fed T. suecica with and without the supplementation of lipid emulsions or liposomes. When...

Incorporation of different fatty acids, supplied as emulsions or liposomes, in the polar and neutral lipids of Crassostrea gigas spat OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Pacific oysters spat (Crassostrea gigas) were fed an algal diet (Tetraselmis suecica) whether or not supplemented with emulsions or liposomes rich in 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 22:6n-3. The preferential accumulation and partitioning of the latter fatty acids between the polar and neutral lipids of C. gigas spat were followed. Additionally, the efficiency of emulsions and liposomes as fatty acid carriers for C. gigas spat were compared. The incorporation of dietary fatty acids was found to vary substantially according to the fatty acid carrier (emulsions vs. liposomes), the particular fatty acid (18:1n-9,...

Supplementation of lipid emulsions to algal diets in the hatchery rearing of bivalves OMA
Coutteau, P.; Caers, M.; Curé, K.; Gajardo, G..
The success of hatchery production of bivalves remains highly unpredictable and mortalities are often attributed to deficiencies in certain nutritionally important components. Several studies have implicated the importance of lipids, in particular triglycerides, in the early life stages as a source of energy and essential fatty acids. Experimental diets used so far in bivalve nutrition studies are either heavily polluting the water or too complex to prepare on a regular basis in a hatchery. Self emulsifying concentrates of marine oils are off-the-shell lipid supplements that may be acceptable for bivalves. A series of studies were performed with different species and life stages to evaluate the potential use of these lipid emulsions as a supplement for...

The effect of lipid supplementation on growth and fatty acid composition of Tapes philippinarum spat OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Lombeida, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The present study investigated the possible use of emulsions as an artificial lipid supplement to live algae for seed of the Manila clam Tapes philippinarum. The uptake and assimilation of an emulsion, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and fed at concentrations of 20 and 40% of the algal dry weight, were verified analytically by fatty acid analysis of the animals and their diets. Dietary requirements for n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) were examined by supplementing Dunaliella tertiolecta, which contains no polyunsaturated fatty acids longer than 18:3n-3 and Tetraselmis suecica, which contains EPA but only trace amounts of DHA. An algal...
